Chapter 10

I apologize for not posting the picture for this, but it wouldn't upload properly so I will try again in a little. But, I will post the information about it here.

The picture is from Chapter 10, Floor Show. I drew a picture of the four girls, their parents, and the Fannings at the dinner table. In the picture the girls all have braids and are smiling, except Sandi who is looking at Mrs. Fanning angrily. Why did I draw Sandi angry? Mrs. Fanning was described as "ugly" and "bucktoothed". Do you think Sandi was over-exaggerating her features out of disgust based on the events that happened at the dinner? Mr. Fanning is also upset with his wife in the picture. Why is this?

Recall what Carlos told his daughters before the dinner: be on you best behavior. He wanted to impress the Americans and show that they could fit in. In the end, how do you think this was ironic? Also consider how the Garcia family felt while with the Fannings.

  1. Well even though you havent posted the picture yet I kinda got the felling already of how your drew it. I think this was a good passage to draw a picture about.

  2. I think that Sandi was deffinently overexaderating when she pictured the Fannings. This is so because if you look at someone from a different culture, you wonder why they do the things they do, or why they wear special garments, well to them, it's perfectly normal. I also think that the reason why they felt strange around the Fannings because their traditions and life styles were so different from what the Dominican Republicans did, and it made them feel very awkward.

  3. I was also thinking that Sandi was particularly harsh when describing Mrs. Fanning. If you remember, she was very drunk and she kissed Carlos by the bathrooms when the three of them went. This was really upsetting to Sandi and he said he went along with it only because he was trying to impress the Fannings and fit in with Americans.

  4. I think Sandi felt like this because she is different from them and she had to just go along with how the Fannings lived.
